01Origin
Why Kerala
Spices shaped Kerala's history. The Malabar Coast traded pepper, cardamom and ginger with Arabia, the Mediterranean and China for centuries, and ports such as Kozhikode, Kochi and Thalassery grew on that trade.
The reasons were geographic. The Western Ghats catch the south-west monsoon, and the forested slopes below them hold the shade, rain and soil that spice plants need. Pepper vines climb the trees; cardamom grows in their shadow.
That tradition continues on thousands of smallholdings today. What has changed is what buyers expect: written specifications, consistent lots, proper documentation and someone who answers the email.
